Teachers come to teaching because of students. They genuinely want to serve both student learning and development. But they often do not know what best serves learning and development. And they often don’t know where the “land mines” are that will undermine their best intentions. They don’t know how to “teach around the rat!” or even that they are supposed to.

This book is based on decades of experience successfully teaching and mentoring educators as well as consulting with schools in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Many of those schools and districts have earned national and international recognition for both academic achievement and student development. More importantly, based on Marvin’s insights and support, thousands of educators have rediscovered the true reason why they went into education—because they loved children and knew how to “teach through or, at least, around a rat!”

Relationships + Rules + Routines = Results is a rather simple book with profound implications

for your career as an educator, regardless of your position in education. This book is about four foundational ideas. These ideas are: 1) positive relationships with all stakeholders combined with the development of, 2) rules that act as expectations and require us to develop, 3) routines with the input of our students and other stakeholders that yields, 4) results in your school across the curriculum as well as throughout all other areas in the life of the school. Or another way to think about this is the formula: Relationships + Rules + Routines = Results The formula is simple, but the ideas within the book will not be simplistic. We will ask you to think and re-think your assumptions about what kind of climate you want to work in so that you and your students can flourish during the school year.
